From a Village Loom to the World: How Praveen Helped His Grandfather Chinnusamy’s Craft Reach Global Customers

For more than six decades, Chinnusamy quietly dedicated his life to weaving beautiful handloom sarees in a small village near Salem, Tamil Nadu. Every thread he created reflected patience, experience, and generations of craftsmanship. Yet despite spending months weaving exquisite sarees by hand, he rarely received the recognition or financial reward he truly deserved.

Like thousands of traditional artisans across India, Chinnusamy watched middlemen earn more from his work than he ever did. Customers admired the sarees, but very few knew the story of the man behind the loom.

Seeing this injustice deeply affected his 23-year-old grandson, Praveen.

Growing up, Praveen had watched his grandfather work tirelessly every single day. He saw the sacrifices Chinnusamy made for the family, including selling his land to educate his children. He also witnessed the emotional pain his grandfather carried after two of his sons went missing. Yet through every hardship, Chinnusamy never gave up weaving because it was more than a profession—it was his life’s purpose.

Praveen believed that the problem wasn’t his grandfather’s craftsmanship. The real problem was visibility.

Determined to change his grandfather’s future, Praveen launched an Instagram page called “Thatha’s Clothing.” Armed with nothing more than a smartphone, a small room, and a powerful vision, he began sharing videos of Chinnusamy weaving sarees by hand. Instead of simply promoting products, he introduced people to the person behind every masterpiece.

His idea quickly struck an emotional chord with people across the internet.

Customers weren’t just buying handloom sarees anymore—they were supporting a craftsman whose talent had remained unnoticed for decades. Orders started pouring in from across India and eventually from countries including Canada, Australia, Malaysia, and many others.

What began as one grandson’s effort to help his grandfather soon evolved into a movement that empowered an entire community.

Today, Thatha’s Clothing connects more than 30 handloom weavers directly with customers. By removing middlemen, artisans can now decide the prices of their own creations and earn fair compensation for their work. The initiative has restored both financial stability and the dignity that many skilled craftsmen had long been denied.

Praveen’s vision demonstrates how digital platforms can preserve traditional crafts while creating sustainable livelihoods. Rather than allowing India’s rich weaving heritage to fade away, he used social media to bring centuries-old craftsmanship to a global audience.

His journey also proves that entrepreneurship isn’t always about building billion-dollar companies. Sometimes, it is about solving a real problem for someone you love.

The success of Thatha’s Clothing is not just about selling sarees. It is about preserving heritage, honoring family, and ensuring that artisans receive the recognition they deserve. It stands as a remarkable example of how young entrepreneurs can use technology to create meaningful social impact while protecting traditional craftsmanship.

Today, Chinnusamy’s sarees are appreciated across the world, but perhaps the greatest achievement belongs to Praveen, who ensured that people finally recognized the hands behind every weave. His simple yet powerful initiative transformed decades of silent hard work into a global legacy.

Their story is a reminder that changing lives doesn’t always require massive investments or extraordinary resources. Sometimes, one determined grandson, one smartphone, and one heartfelt idea are enough to change an entire family’s future—and inspire millions along the way.
